Wycombe General Hospital | X-Ray Room with Sense-X® Technology
This case study explores Raybloc’s collaboration with Wycombe General Hospital and Modus Building Services Limited to deliver a patient-focused radiation shielding solution for a newly designed X-ray facility. The project combined Raybloc’s specialist shielding expertise with a strong emphasis on patient experience and staff wellbeing, introducing innovative design features not typically associated with conventional imaging rooms.
From early coordination through to manufacture, delivery, and installation, the project demonstrates how thoughtful integration of shielding products can enhance both clinical performance and the emotional environment of diagnostic spaces. Notably, this installation marked the first deployment of Raybloc’s Sense-X® operator screen in a live hospital setting, providing a new approach to comfort-led imaging design.
Installation of Customised Radiation Protection Solutions
The installation of the radiation protection solutions by the engineering and installation teams at Raybloc involved close collaboration with the project stakeholders. This ensured that the final result met the requirements of the project in terms of functionality and aesthetic appeal. In particular, the installation had to take into account the working conditions of the operators, as the radiographers spend a lot of time behind the protective screens in the course of their daily work in the clinical setting.
The installation had to be carried out in a way that did not disrupt the normal function of the hospital while at the same time ensuring that all the components met the required standards.
The Solution
Raybloc supplied and installed a tailored shielding package designed to balance technical compliance with human-centred design. The scope included:
The scope included:
- A non-leaded FD30S fire-rated Raybloc single doorset with integrated flush-mounted warning light
- A Code 5 lead-lined FD30S double doorset providing high-level radiation attenuation
- A bespoke Sense-X® operator screen with integrated lighting technology
- Dedicated delivery and specialist installation services
The Sense-X® screen formed the focal point of the operator area, incorporating integrated lighting designed to create a softer and more reassuring environment for both patients and staff. This installation represented the first time the technology was used in a hospital X-ray room, providing valuable insight into its real-world impact.

The Benefits of Installing Control Booths, Windows and Doorsets from Raybloc
This project demonstrates how radiation shielding solutions can actively enhance the clinical environment, rather than simply serving as passive safety components.
- Effective radiation protection seamlessly integrated into a welcoming diagnostic environment
- Enhanced visual connection between staff and patients, supporting communication and reassurance
- Reduced anxiety levels, particularly for vulnerable groups such as paediatric patients
- Improved working conditions for radiographers through a more considered room design
The impact of this approach was evident immediately. The first patient treated in the room was a child, and clinical staff reported that the softer, more considered design had a noticeably positive effect on the patient’s comfort during the procedure.
This serves as a clear example of how integrating human factors into healthcare design can elevate both patient experience and clinical outcomes, without compromising on safety or compliance.
