Wycombe General Hospital | X-Ray Room with Sense-X® Technology

This case study explores Raybloc’s collaboration with Wycombe General Hospital and Modus Building Services Limited to deliver a patient-focused radiation shielding solution for a newly designed X-ray facility. The Challenge

Wycombe General Hospital sought to create an X-ray room that went beyond basic compliance and functionality. The clinical team wanted an environment that would reduce anxiety, support radiographer wellbeing during long operating periods, and improve the experience for vulnerable patients, particularly children.

As part of the programme, the project required radiation shielding solutions that could integrate seamlessly into:

  • A fully compliant diagnostic imaging room within an operational hospital environment
  • Fire-rated access points aligned with hospital safety strategy
  • A high-visibility operator position with effective radiation protection
  • A calming, patient-centred design without compromising technical performance

Unlike traditional shielding installations, the objective was not solely to meet regulatory requirements but to create a space that felt welcoming and reassuring while maintaining strict radiation safety standards.

Installation of Customised Radiation Protection Solutions

The installation of the radiation protection solutions by the engineering and installation teams at Raybloc involved close collaboration with the project stakeholders. This ensured that the final result met the requirements of the project in terms of functionality and aesthetic appeal. In particular, the installation had to take into account the working conditions of the operators, as the radiographers spend a lot of time behind the protective screens in the course of their daily work in the clinical setting.
The installation had to be carried out in a way that did not disrupt the normal function of the hospital while at the same time ensuring that all the components met the required standards.
