How Much Do Lead-Lined Walls Cost?

When planning an X-ray room, CT suite, dental surgery or veterinary imaging facility, lead-lined walls often represent one of the largest elements of the overall radiation shielding budget.

Unlike lead-lined doors or windows, wall shielding costs are multiplied across the entire room. Even relatively small changes in lead equivalence can have a significant impact on the final project cost when applied to large wall areas.

This guide explains how lead-lined walls are costed, typical lead-lined plasterboard prices and the information required to produce an accurate shielding quotation.

How Are Lead-Lined Walls Constructed?

Lead-lined walls are commonly created using lead-lined plasterboard or lead-lined plywood panels.

Raybloc lead-lined boards are typically supplied in a standard size of 2400mm x 600mm and are supplied with lead strips of equal lead equivalence. These strips are used to maintain shielding continuity at the joints between boards.

For many dental, veterinary, CT and general X-ray rooms, Code 3 and Code 5 are common lead equivalence levels.

Why Wall Area Has Such a Big Impact on Cost

One of the biggest differences between lead-lined walls and other shielding products is scale.

A lead-lined door may require a relatively modest amount of shielding material. A room may require dozens or even hundreds of lead-lined boards.

For example, if a room requires 100 Code 3 lead-lined plasterboards, the board and lead strip cost may total around £9,100 excluding VAT.

If that same room requires Code 5 lead-lined boards, the cost could increase to approximately £13,500 excluding VAT.

This demonstrates why wall area and shielding height are so important when preparing a radiation shielding quotation. A relatively small change in specification can be multiplied across the entire room.

Does Higher Lead Equivalence Always Increase Costs Significantly?

The answer depends on the product.

For a single lead-lined door, increasing the lead equivalence may only have a modest impact on cost.

For wall shielding, the effect is often much greater because the additional shielding requirement applies across every board installed within the room.

This is why the shielding specification should always be based on the RPA report.

Over-specification can increase project costs unnecessarily, while under-specification can create compliance issues and potentially require costly remedial work.

What Information Is Needed to Price Lead-Lined Walls Accurately?

Shielding continuity must be maintained throughout the room.

This includes:

  • Board-to-board joints

  • Junctions with floors and ceilings

This is why lead strips are installed at board joints and why shielding products must be coordinated as part of a complete shielding package.

What About Lead Chevron Bricks?

Lead chevron bricks are generally used for higher shielding requirements where standard lead-lined boards may not be suitable.

They are often considered for applications requiring greater lead thickness, usually in excess of 7mm Pb.

Unlike lead-lined plasterboard, lead chevron brick pricing can fluctuate significantly because costs are closely linked to London Metal Exchange lead rates.

For this reason, chevron brick requirements are typically priced on a project-by-project basis.

For most dental, veterinary, CT and general X-ray rooms, lead-lined boards remain the most common shielding solution.

Installation Considerations

Wall shielding installation costs will depend on:

  • Room size
  • Quantity of boards
  • Site access
  • Location
  • Programme requirements
  • Coordination with other trades

As with all radiation shielding products, installation quality is critical.

Lead-lined boards must be installed correctly to ensure shielding continuity is maintained throughout the controlled area.
