How Much Does a Lead-Lined Door Cost?
This is one of the most common questions asked when planning an X-ray room, CT suite, dental surgery or veterinary imaging facility.
A single lead-lined door typically starts from around £2,500 excluding VAT, while double or unequal pair lead-lined door sets typically start from around £4,200 excluding VAT.
However, the final cost depends on a number of factors.
Unlike standard commercial doors, lead-lined doors form part of a complete radiation shielding system and must maintain shielding continuity throughout the opening.
This guide explains typical lead-lined door costs and the factors that can influence the final price.
A Lead-Lined Door Is More Than Just a Door Leaf
One of the most common misunderstandings around lead-lined door cost is the assumption that only the door leaf needs to be shielded.
In reality, a properly shielded opening requires a complete lead door set.
That means the shielding must continue from the lead-lined wall, into the lead-lined architrave, through the lead-lined frame, into the lead-lined door leaf and around any lead glass vision panel.
Each joint must be designed with suitable lead overlap so that X-rays do not leak through gaps between materials.
For example, where a lead-lined wall meets a leaded door, the shielding should not simply stop at the edge of the opening. The frame and architraves must also be lead lined to continue the protective barrier into the surrounding wall construction.
The same applies to vision panels. Lead glass in a door must be installed with appropriate shielding overlap between the glass and the door leaf. Without this continuity, the weakest point of the opening can compromise the performance of the controlled area.
This is why lead-lined doors are not priced like ordinary joinery. They are compliance-critical radiation shielding products that must be manufactured to the correct specification and installed correctly to perform as intended.
Typical Single Lead-Lined Door Costs
A single lead-lined door typically starts from around £2,500 excluding VAT.
This price is for a primer-painted door leaf, lead-lined frame and leaded architraves with approximately 1mm Pb lead equivalence.
This provides a complete basic lead-lined door set, but the final cost will depend on the required specification.

A fully PVC encapsulated lead-lined door is often specified in areas where hygiene, cleaning, moisture resistance or heavy-use conditions are important.
However, not every project requires full PVC encapsulation. In some cases, a laminate door leaf with a primer-painted frame may provide a suitable balance of durability, appearance and cost.

This is why early discussion is valuable. A customer may initially believe they need the highest-cost finish, when a simpler specification may still meet the room’s shielding, cleaning and durability requirements.
Double Lead-Lined Door Cost: What Affects the Price?
A double lead-lined door set or unequal pair leaded door typically starts from around £4,200 excluding VAT for a basic primer-painted specification.
Double lead doors and unequal pairs are more expensive than single lead-lined doors because they require additional material, more ironmongery, more manufacturing time and careful design around the meeting stile to maintain shielding continuity.

For standard double or unequal pair lead-lined door sets, Raybloc includes a hardwood rebated meeting stile by default. This helps provide a more robust closing detail between the two door leaves.
For PVC encapsulated door pairs, an astragal strip is the default option due to the additional work involved in creating a rebated PVC encapsulated meeting stile.
This detail can affect both cost and long-term performance, particularly in high-traffic healthcare environments where durability, cleaning and shielding continuity all matter.
Why Do Lead-Lined Doors Cost More Than Standard Doors?
A lead-lined door is not simply a heavy door.
It is a complete shielded access system that must maintain protection through every edge, joint, rebate and glazed opening.
A properly manufactured lead door set may include:
- Lead-lined door leaf
- Lead-lined frame
- Lead-lined architraves
- Fully concealed lead
- Vision panel with lead glass
- Lead overlap around glazed areas
- Suitable ironmongery
- Drop seals where required
- Fire rating where specified
- Durable finishes
- Pre-hung manufacture for improved site fit
The materials also matter. Raybloc uses hardwood rather than softwood for durability, and all lead is fully concealed within the product to prevent exposure, peeling or damage over time.
A cheaper lead-lined door may appear attractive initially, but in radiation shielding, long-term value comes from correct specification, robust manufacture, reliable installation and lasting protection.
Does Higher Lead Equivalence Always Mean a Much Higher Cost?
Not always.
For example, increasing a single lead-lined door from Code 3 (1.32mm Pb) to Code 5 (2.24mm Pb) may only add around £100 excluding VAT to the door cost.
However, higher lead equivalence becomes far more significant when repeated across large wall areas or multiple shielding products.
This is why quotations should always be based on the correct lead equivalence specified by the Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA).
Over-specification can increase costs unnecessarily, while under-specification can create compliance issues.
Why Finish Choices Can Have a Major Impact on Cost
One of the most important cost factors is finish.
Typical finish options include:
- Primer-painted
- Laminate
- Lacquered veneer
- PVC encapsulated
Each finish serves a different purpose.
Primer-painted options are often selected where the door will be decorated by others. Laminate can offer improved durability and a more finished appearance. PVC encapsulation may be preferred where hygiene, moisture resistance and cleaning are key considerations.
The correct choice depends on the room, the users, the level of traffic and the expectations of the facility.
Warning Lights for Lead-Lined Doors
Warning lights are a common requirement for X-ray controlled areas.
Customers often ask whether a flush-mounted warning light costs significantly more than a traditional box warning light. In many cases, they are approximately the same cost.
A flush-mounted warning light may add around £600 excluding VAT to a lead-lined door leaf.
The key difference is integration. A flush-mounted warning light is built into the door leaf, helping create a cleaner appearance while supporting clear visual communication at the point of access.
What Information Is Needed for an Accurate Door Quote?
