Raybloc's Fixed X-Ray Protective Screen Products
Raybloc manufactures a complete range of fixed operator X-ray screen configurations to suit different room layouts, workflows and shielding requirements.
| Screen Type | Fixing Method | Configuration | Level of Shielding | Typical Applications | Key Benefits |
| Free-Standing Screen (Dual Wing) | Floor-fixed, self-supporting or braced from wall | Central panel with two adjustable wings (90°, 120°, 135°, 150°) | Moderate to high | Retrofit projects, modular rooms, veterinary & dental clinics | Flexible layout, no structural wall required, adaptable to space constraints |
| Straight Wall-Fixed Screen | Floor-fixed & wall-fixed | Single fixed panel with lead glass | Moderate | Small or simple room layouts, narrow spaces, fixed operator positions | Cleanest aesthetic, minimal footprint, easy integration |
| Wall-Fixed Screen with Single Wing | Wall-fixed | Main panel plus one lateral wing | High | Standard X-ray rooms, increased scatter protection | Improved lateral shielding without enclosing the space |
| Wall-Fixed Screen with Wing and Return | Wall-fixed | Main panel, wing and return panel | Very high | Fluoroscopy, high-output imaging, rooms with close operator proximity | Wrap-around protection, maximises staff safety |
| Screen with Hinged Door Leaf | Wall-fixed + structural wall for door | Screen plus lead-lined door forming enclosed booth | Very high | Control booths, defined operator zones, high-activity rooms | Enclosed protection, controlled access, enhanced safety |
| Sense-X Screen | Wall-fixed or free-standing | Fixed operator screen with integrated LED illumination | Moderate to high | Dental or paediatric and patient-focused environments | Reduces patient anxiety, enhances room atmosphere, maintains shielding |
Type 1: Free-Standing Screens (Dual-Wing)
Floor-fixed and self-supporting with adjustable wings (90°, 120°, 135° or 150°).
Best for: retrofit projects, modular installations, veterinary and dental rooms, and locations without suitable structural walls.
Type 2:Wall-Fixed Screens
The most widely specified configuration across NHS hospitals and private imaging centres.
- Straight wall-fixed screen
- Wall-fixed screen with single wing
- Wall-fixed screen with wing and return for enhanced wrap-around shielding
Best for: high-activity X-ray rooms, fluoroscopy environments and rooms requiring enhanced operator protection.
Type 2A: Straight Wall-Fixed Screen
A single fixed panel with integrated lead glass.
Suitable for simple room layouts, narrow spaces or fixed operator positions.
Type 2B: Wall-Fixed Screen With Single Wing
A straight wall-fixed screen with one wing added.
The wing can be positioned at 90°, 120°, 135° or 150°.
This provides additional lateral shielding without restricting access or workflow.

Type 2C: Wall-Fixed Screen With Wing and Return
A multi-panel configuration that provides enhanced wrap-around shielding.
Both the wing and the return can be manufactured at 90°, 120°, 135° or 150°.
This setup supports rooms that require a more enclosed operator zone for radiation safety.
Type 3: Screen With Hinged Door Leaf
This configuration combines a wall-fixed operator screen with a lead-lined door to create an enclosed control booth. The screen forms the protective barrier while the door provides safe operator entry and exit.
Important: The door must be hinged on a structural wall rather than the screen panel. This ensures correct weight distribution, long-term durability and compliance with door-frame performance standards.
If wings are included, they can be set at 90°, 120°, 135° or 150°.
Type 4: Sense-X Screen
Raybloc also offers the Sense X Screen. It is a fixed operator X-ray screen that incorporates patient-friendly LED illumination designed to reduce anxiety in dental and hospital imaging environments, improving patient experience. The Sense-X Screen is referenced here for completeness and is presented fully on its dedicated product page.
Type 5: Custom Type
Raybloc can manufacture bespoke lead-lined fixed x-ray screens tailored to complex room shapes or specialist clinical layouts. Custom glazing sizes, wing angles and integrated cabinetry are available upon request.
Our fixed operator screens are constructed using an encapsulated lead core to achieve the required level of X-ray shielding. The lead thickness (mm Pb) is selected in accordance with the specification provided by your Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) to meet the shielding requirements of the imaging room.
Standard specifications include:
- 2.24 mm Pb (Code 5)
- 2.65 mm Pb (Code 6)
Higher lead equivalences of lead screens are available for specialist environments such as fluoroscopy, CT and high-output imaging rooms. Panel weight increases with lead thickness and is considered during design and installation planning.
Lead thickness is increased to achieve various levels of radiation protection as advised by an RPA (Radiation Protection Adviser). Weights of various thickness of lead are shown on this illustration. Higher thickness of lead is available upon special request.
Raybloc’s fixed operator X-ray screens are supplied with a high-pressure laminate finish as standard, providing a durable, hygienic and easy-to-clean surface.
Using a variety of UK laminate suppliers, you are able to specify any colour laminate at no additional cost. To help improve patient experience, Raybloc also offer free vinyl graphics for your X ray screens: all we need is a vectorised image, and we’ll do the rest.
With these options, Raybloc screens can be manufactured in various laminate brands and finished with custom vinyl graphics to suit specific interior design themes, ensuring aesthetic consistency within your premises, improving the environment for staff and patients alike.
Raybloc has refined its fixed operator X-ray screen designs through close collaboration with radiographers, clinicians, estates teams and contractors.
Our screens:
- Maximise sight-lines between operator and patient
- Reduce the enclosed feeling of traditional radiation booths
- Improve hygiene by eliminating deep joints and dust traps
- Support modern clinical aesthetics
The result is a lead-lined X-ray protective operator screen that supports safety, workflow, comfort and professionalism in equal measure.
| Lead Thickness (mm Pb) | Typical X-Ray Shielding Use | Common Room Types | Notes |
| 2.24 mm Pb (Code 5) | General diagnostic shielding for low- to medium-output equipment | Dental X-ray rooms, OPG, CBCT, chiropractic suites, hospital X-ray rooms, fluoroscopy procedure rooms, veterinary diagnostic rooms |
Suitable for most primary care imaging. RPA will confirm suitability depending on workload, room layout, and operator position. |
| 2.65 mm Pb (Code 6) | Higher attenuation for increased safety margin in higher workload or multi-directional scatter environments |
Hospital X-ray rooms | Often chosen where scatter geometry is complex or the operator station is closer to the source. |
| >3.0 mm Pb (Special Request) | Specialist shielding for high-powered or unusual diagnostic setups | NDT rooms, specialist research facilities | Fixed screens become impractical at this weight. Shielding is normally integrated into walls with lead-lined internal viewing windows, as these can safely support higher lead equivalence. |
